Stewart O´Nan wurde 1961 in Pittsburgh geboren und wuchs in Boston auf. Er arbeitete als Flugzeugingenieur und studierte in Cornell Literaturwissenschaft. Heute lebt er mit seiner Frau und seinen zwei Kindern in Avon, Connecticut. Für seinen Erstlingsroman “Engel im Schnee” erhielt er 1993 den William-Faulkner-Preis.

It is the English language service of perlentaucher.de, the largest cultural online magazine in German language.They deliver a daily press review of the German language feuilletons. Starting in October 2007, they will provide a weekly summary, “From the Feuilletons”, and two articles per week. Besides, they are entering into a cooperation with the Dutch daily newspaper “Trouw” and will be translating selected articles from it.

In der Reihe “3durch3″ treffen sich diesmal die russische und deutsche Sprachkunst. Sergej Birjukov ist einer der wichtigsten Vertreter und Kenner der gegenwärtigen russischen Poesie-Avantgarde. Valeri Scherstjanoi, international renommierter Schrift- und Lautpoesiekünstler entführt in sein Lautland. Beide begegnen dem Dichter, Jazzmusiker und Mykologen Hartmut Geerken und seiner Feier des Genitivs. Die Reihe 3durch3 wird vom Kunsttempel in Kassel, der Stiftung Brückner-Kühner und der Stadtbücherei Stuttgart veranstaltet.

Nonfiction.fr (in French) was born in October 2007. This leftist site dedicated to non-fiction publications was created by researchers, journalists, militants, politicians, businessmen. It is fed by 10 permanent people and 400 regular collaborators, led by 35 editors in chief. They create 30 critics every week, and their goal is to review as much as possible from the 100 new non-fiction titles published every day.

Grace Paley: a lyricist of the domestic life

The good friend who told me about McSweeney  (see previous post) warmly recommended to me Grace Paley (that he discovered himself through McSweeney). She wrote above all short stories. “Totally delectable”. From what he said, as good as Carver, but much less desesperate, and her characters are not alcoholic insurance contractors of the Mid west, but rather New-York based jewish artists or leftist militants. It’s incisive, biting and sharping. Born in New York City in 1922, of Russian-Jewish immigrants who settled in the poor quarter of the Lower East Side, Paley emerged from the densely populated, fiercely individualistic Yiddish culture of which Anzia Yezierska (1885-1970) and Henry Roth (1906-1997) wrote in the 1920s and 1930s in such acclaimed novels as Bread Givers and Call It Sleep respectively (said J. Carol Oates).
Joyces Carol Oates, Philip Roth and Raymond Carver count among her fervent admirers (see their reviews of Paley’s work here , here and there). Susan Sontag too: ‘Grace Paley makes me weep and laugh – and admire. She is that rare kind of writer, a natural, with a voice like no one else’s: funny, sad, lean, modest, energetic, acute.’

In German, all I found was “Später am selben Tag. Geschichten”, Frankfurt/Main, Suhrkamp. 1989, which suggests that some texts are not translated yet.
